Square Word
A free word square puzzle in the spirit of the daily Squareword. A hidden grid of letters is waiting — every row and every column spells a real word. Type any word of the right length: letters that match a row in the same position are revealed for that row, and every guess is checked against all rows at once. Yellow letters beside a row show letters you have found that are still hiding in it. Reveal the whole square in as few guesses as you can.
How to play
- Type a word of the grid length (4 or 5 letters) and press Enter — on phones, use the on-screen keyboard.
- Your guess is compared with every row at the same time: any letter in the right position for a row is revealed in the grid.
- Yellow letters beside a row are letters you have guessed that are still hidden somewhere in that row.
- Every row and every column is a real word — use the crossings to deduce the rest. Reveal all the letters to win; fewer guesses is a better score.

Where does the word square come from?
The word square is one of the oldest word puzzles there is: squares of words reading the same across and down appear as far back as the Roman Sator square, and Victorian puzzle columns were full of them. The guess-to-reveal version was popularised online by the daily game Squareword; this is a free, independent puzzle in the same spirit, with unlimited games as well as a daily.
How to play Square Word well
Open with vowel-rich common words, read the yellow hints, and let the columns do half the work for you.
- Start wide. Words like RAISE, LATER or STONE test common letters across all rows at once.
- Mind the position. A letter only reveals when it sits in the right column, so re-use known letters in different positions to sweep a row.
- Read the yellows. The letters beside a row are confirmed to be in it — anagram them with the revealed letters to guess the whole row word.
- Use the columns. Every column is a word too. A half-revealed column often forces the remaining letters of two or three rows at once.
- Spend guesses to finish. Once you know a row, type it — the whole row locks in, and its letters often complete the crossings.

Square Word vs Wordle
