Number Match

Play Number Match — the number pairs puzzle also known as Numberama or Take Ten — free in your browser, with no download and no sign-up. Clear a grid of digits by tapping two numbers that are either equal or add up to 10. The catch is what counts as a pair: the two numbers must be next to each other — side by side, one above the other, diagonally, or consecutive in reading order — and already-cleared cells do not block the line, so the board keeps opening up as you play. Run out of pairs? Tap Add rows to write the remaining numbers out again beneath the board. Clear every cell to win.

How to play

What is Number Match?

Number Match is a number-pairs elimination puzzle: you clear a grid of digits by pairing numbers that are equal or that add up to 10, as long as the two are neighbours on the board. It is a pure-logic time filler with no vocabulary, no arithmetic beyond making ten, and no luck once the board is dealt — every board here can be cleared.

Where does it come from?

The puzzle is far older than its phone versions. Generations of schoolchildren played it on squared paper as Numberama, Take Ten or simply "the numbers game", writing out 1 to 19 digit by digit and crossing off pairs. That paper opening is still the classic one, and it hides a neat quirk: it leaves 29 digits, an odd count, so you can never clear it without writing the leftovers out at least once. The mechanic reached a much wider audience through mobile versions in the 2020s. This is a free, independent browser game and is not affiliated with Easybrain or its Number Match app.

How to play Number Match well

Clear from the top, spend your add-rows late, and watch what each clear opens up.

  • Work the top rows first. Emptying a whole row removes it and pulls everything up — that is the only way the board actually shrinks.
  • Gaps are your friend. Cleared cells do not block a connection, so a number that looked stranded often becomes reachable after a nearby clear. Re-scan the neighbourhood after every move.
  • Do not rush the add. Adding rows makes the grid bigger; take every pair you can see first. A clean solve is measured in how few times you had to add.
  • Hunt the vertical pairs. They are the easiest to miss — most players scan left-to-right and never look down the columns.
  • Remember the reading-order rule. The last number of a row pairs with the first number of the next one. Those wrap-around pairs are invisible if you only think in straight lines.

Difficulty: measured, not guessed

The three difficulty settings here are not a guess — every board was measured before it shipped. We generated a thousand boards and played each one out a hundred times, then sorted them by how many times an average game needs to add rows before the grid comes out clean.

  • Easy — clears in about 3 add-rows and 25 moves. Plenty of pairs on screen at any moment.
  • Medium — about 4 add-rows. The standard game.
  • Hard — about 5 add-rows and 41 moves, with noticeably fewer options per turn, so ordering your clears actually matters.

Every board on every setting is clearable, so a game you cannot finish is a game you can still fix — not a dead deal.

Play free online — no download, no ads

This runs in the browser on phone, tablet and desktop: no download, no install, no account, and no ads interrupting a game. That is the main reason to play a number puzzle on the web rather than installing an app — you can open a board on a work laptop, on a phone in a queue, or on a PC without a store account, and it starts instantly.

Tap New for an unlimited supply of fresh boards at any difficulty, or play the Daily — the same board for everyone, every day. Progress is yours alone: nothing to sign up for, nothing collected.

Why play Number Match?

It is the rare puzzle that is genuinely relaxing and genuinely logical at the same time. There is nothing to learn beyond "same, or makes ten", so you can start in ten seconds — but clearing a hard board cleanly takes real scanning discipline and a bit of planning about which row to empty next.

If you like it, the same kind of quiet number logic runs through Magic Square, Kakuro and Sudoku — all free here, all in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Number Match game?

Number Match is a number puzzle in which you clear a grid of digits by tapping pairs that are either equal or add up to 10. The two numbers must be neighbours — horizontally, vertically, diagonally or consecutive in reading order — and cleared cells do not block the connection. It is also known as Numberama or Take Ten.

How do you play Number Match online for free?

Just open the board above and start tapping — there is no download, no install and no sign-up. Tap two numbers that match or add up to 10 to clear them, use Add rows when you run out of pairs, and clear the whole grid to win. It works the same on phone, tablet and PC.

What are the rules for pairing numbers?

Two numbers can be cleared when they are equal (4 and 4) or sum to 10 (6 and 4), AND they are adjacent to one another: side by side, one above the other, diagonal, or next to each other in reading order — including the wrap from the end of a row to the start of the next. Cells you have already cleared are treated as empty space, so they never block a pair.

What does the Add rows button do?

It writes every number still on the board out again underneath, in order, giving you fresh neighbours to work with. There is no limit on how many times you can use it, so you can never lose — but a clean solve uses as few adds as possible.

Can every board be cleared?

Yes. Every board offered here was verified as solvable before it shipped, and because add-rows are unlimited you can always keep going. The difficulty setting reflects how many adds an average game needs, not whether the board can be finished.

Is this the Number Match app?

No — this is a free, independent browser version of the classic number-pairs puzzle, and it is not affiliated with Easybrain or its Number Match app. There is nothing to install: it plays in your browser, with a daily board plus unlimited free puzzles.
